è possibile leggere una poco rassicurante descrizione dei possibili effetti collaterali della finasteide tra cui quello di risultare una possibile promotrice di una forma particolarmente aggressiva di tumore alla prostata.

But researchers were not convinced that men should take the drug to prevent the disease, which, after skin cancer, is the most common form of cancer among men. While the men who took finasteride were diagnosed with fewer cases of the disease, they had more high-grade prostate cancers, which typically are more aggressive than other forms.

 

In all, 6.4 percent of the men on finasteride had high-grade tumors, versus 5.1 percent of men on placebos.

 

The reason for that disparity was not clear. Thompson said finasteride may result in the development of more aggressive tumors either by preventing only low-grade tumors or by making the prostate gland more favorable to aggressive tumors.

 

Dr. John Wasson, director of the Center for Aging at Dartmouth Medical School in Hanover, New Hampshire, and who served on the study's safety monitoring committee, said the tumor findings raised a number of questions: "What really is finasteride doing here? Is it a promoter of mean types of cancer, or a suppresser of meaningless types?"

 

The study was stopped a year earlier than planned because it was determined that the extra time was unlikely to yield new information. In addition, Wasson cited concerns over the apparent increased risk of more aggressive tumors.

 

Though the study is a major step forward, men should carefully weigh their options before opting to take the drug as a preventive measure, Dr. Harmon J. Eyre, chief medical officer of the American Cancer Society, said in a statement.

 

"There are still some important unanswered questions, especially regarding side effects, whether it can benefit men at increased risk, especially African Americans, who are twice as likely as white men to die of prostate cancer, and the mechanism by which men taking the drug develop higher grade tumors."

 

Other side effects

Despite the concerns, Dr. Nabil Khawand, a physician at Washington Hospital Center, said he would leave the decision to his patients. "I will tell him the result of the study and I will give him the option, whether he wants to be on it or he doesn't want to be on it."

 

Apparent side effects went beyond tumor aggressiveness. Men taking finasteride were more likely than men on placebo to experience sexual side effects such as impotence.

 

But men taking the placebos were more likely to be diagnosed with enlarged prostate and urinary problems.

 

This year, prostate cancer is expected to be diagnosed in more than 200,000 men and kill about 29,000 in the United States. It is typically a slow-growing cancer and most of the men who are diagnosed with it go on to die of something unrelated, even if they undergo no treatment for it.

 

For young men using the drug to promote hair growth, "I certainly wouldn't want to be taking a drug that potentially promotes cancer of the mean types," Dartmouth's Wasson said. "First, do no harm, that's the bottom line with any drug or treatment ... if you're a young guy, you should really be concerned about finasteride."

 

He predicted the study results would lead the Food and Drug Administration to take a fresh look at the safety data on the drug, which is made by Merck and requires a prescription. No one from the agency was immediately available to comment, and a call to the drug maker was not immediately returned.

Da più parti si asserisce questa cosa ma non c'è uno studio ufficiale che lo ha provato. Ciao

la spiegazione è molto semplice. la finasteride è stata studiata nella ipertrofia prostatica e questi pazienti sono % molto favorevoli a contrarre il cancro alla prostata. in un trial del genere non è possibile dire se e in che % sia stata la molecola a determinare il tumore quindi si mette nel bugiardino per tranquillità.

è evidente che non è la fina a far venire il tumore......ma burocrazticamente è corretto descrivere questo caso.

 

 

p,s, nello studio della fina si è visto che anche i pazienti che utilizzavano placebo hanno contratto cancro alla prostata....capito no?

Prostate Cancer Prevention Trial : riduzione dell'incidenza di carcinoma prostatico con la Finasteride

 

 

Gli androgeni svolgono un ruolo chiave nello sviluppo del tumore della prostata.

Il diidrotestosterone è il principale androgeno presente nella prostata.

 

La Finasteride è un inibitore dell'enzima 5 alfa-riduttasi, che trasforma il testosterone in diidrotestosterone.

 

Lo studio Prostate Cancer Prevention Trial è stato disegnato con l'obiettivo di verificare se la Finasteride fosse in grado di ridurre il rischio di carcinoma della prostata.

 

Sono stati arruolati 18882 uomini di 55 anni o più, risultati normali all'esame rettale digitale e con livelli di PSA ( prostate-specific antigen ) di 3.0 ng per ml, o inferiore.

Questi soggetti sono stati assegnati in modo random al trattamento con Finasteride 5 mg/die o a placebo , per 7 anni.

 

L'end point primario era rappresentato dall'incidenza di carcinoma prostatico durante lo studio.

 

Il carcinoma della prostata è stato osservato nel 18,4% (803/4368) degli uomini trattati con la Finasteride e nel 24,4% (1147/4692) di quelli del gruppo placebo.

 

La riduzione dell'incidenza di tumore della prostata con la Finasteride è stata del 24,8% rispetto al placebo in 7 anni ( p< 0.001).

 

Tuttavia i tumori di grado 7, 8, 9 o 10 secondo Gleason sono risultati più comuni nei pazienti trattati con la Finasteride (6,4% ; n=280) rispetto al placebo (5,1%; n=237) ( p=0.005 ).

 

Gli effetti indesiderati a livello sessuale sono stati osservati con maggiore frequenza nel gruppo Finasteride, mentre i sintomi urinari lo sono stati nel gruppo placebo.

 

Il National Cancer Institute , visti i benefici prodotti dalla Finasteride , ha interrotto prima del previsto lo studio.

 

Gli Autori tuttavia esprimono cautela nell'impiego della Finasteride in questa nuova indicazione. Infatti la Finasteride ha mostrato di prevenire o ritardare la comparsa del tumore della prostata, ma ha anche prodotto una maggiore incidenza di carcinoma prostatico ad alta malignità. lo previene infatti... Solo che alcuni che pensano di sapere l'inglese e leggono di carcinoma alla prostata non capiscono che "nelle situazioni in cui c'è già il carcinoma, la finasteride potrebbe MASCHERARLO facendo così aggravare la situazione".

 

Coloro che sono risultati positivi allo studio scentifico da me menzionato avevano 55 anni all'inizio della cura ed erano stati in cura per 7 anni tondi.
