Reversal of Human Baldness with an ANTIAlpha-5 Alpha Reductase Ribozyme

INTRODUCTION

 

The enzyme steroid 5 alpha-reductase catalyzes the conversion of testosterone to the more potent androgen dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Male pattern baldness has been associated with elevated levels of the enzyme 5 alpha-reductase and elevated levels of DHT. Therapeutically reducing the amount of this enzyme could lower the levels of DHT, and thus reverse male pattern baldness.

 

THE TECHNOLOGY

 

Investigators have developed a ribozyme that selectively cleaves mRNA for 5 alpha-reductase (which includes type I and type II enzymes) and reduces the mRNA levels, enzyme levels, and DHT concentrations. This could theoretically reverse male pattern baldness. The ribozyme may be used as a pharmaceutical composition for topical application capable of cleaving mRNA coding for 5 alpha-reductase.
