Ok buona lettura e buona serata Baci Giulia --------------------------------------- P156 Free Fatty Acids Play a Role in the Development of an Unhealthy Scalp Joseph R Kaczvinsky, Jr., Ph.D.; Thomas Dawson, Ph.D.; The Procter and Gamble Company, Ross, OH; James Schwartz, Ph.D.; The Procter and Gamble Company, Cincinnati, OH Scalp lipids contain significant amounts of free fatty acids. For the most part, these are produced from sebum triglycerides by the hydrolytic action of microbial enzymes, especially those from the dandruff-causing fungus Malassezia globosa. Among the most common free fatty acids found on the scalp are oleic (C18:1), palmitoleic (C16:1) and palmitic (C16:0) acids. The inherent irritancy of these acids, as well as their disruptive effect on skin barrier integrity, are well documented. This led us to hypothesize that increased free fatty acid levels on the scalp could negatively affect scalp health. To better understand the role increased sebaceous free fatty acids might play in overall scalp health, the scalps of human subjects were dosed with oleic acid. It was found that the addition of this fatty acid to the scalp promoted flaking that histologically and clinically resembled dandruff. In addition, the oleic acid could induce the sub-clinical abnormalities that have been associated with unhealthy scalp. We detected no increases in fungal population after dosing, so the observed changes in scalp condition were likely a direct result of an effect from the acid. Net, free fatty acids on the scalp contribute to the development of unhealthy scalp conditions, including dandruff. -------------------------------------------- Reducing the Appearance of Unwanted Hair with a Natural Soy Formulation Nebus A Judith, M.B.A.; Warren Wallo, M.S.; Sher Dara, M.S.; Ellen S. Kurtz, Ph.D.; Johnson & Johnson CPWW Worldwide, Skillman, NJ Today’s lifestyles are very demanding and there is a strong consumer need by adult women for timesaving measures especially when it comes to bothersome routine rituals such as leg shaving. Current methods of hair removal are effective but can be time consuming, expensive, and/or irritating to the skin. Formulations containing Natural Soy have been shown to be successful in delivering multibenefits to skin. This research was performed to identify the benefits of a Natural Soy formulation on the appearance of body hair. A blinded 8-week clinical trial was performed to determine the effects of a Natural Soy formulation on the appearance of unwanted hair. Thirty women between the ages of 18 – 55 years completed the study. Subjects applied the formulation twice a day to one leg. Clinical endpoints included appearance of hair growth, hair softness, fineness and overall skin moisturization properties. Efficacy of the Natural Soy formulation was measured by expert grader evaluations, video microscopy, conductance measurements, and self-assessments. Clinical evaluations included the scoring of the hair parameters as well as a forced choice grading between the untreated and the treated leg. After 2 weeks of use with the Natural Soy preparation there were noticeable improvements in hair coarseness and the look and feel of the leg hair as determined by the expert grader forced choice grading. Subjects perceived a significant improvement (p<0.05) in hair softness when compared to baseline values and the untreated leg after 2, 4, and 6 weeks of the preparation usage. After 6 weeks of the Natural Soy preparations use subjects perceived a significant improvement (p<0.05) in the overall appearance of leg hair when compared to the baseline values. These findings in hair parameters were further verified by instrumental analysis. In addition, subjects noticed significant improvements (p<0.05) in skin softness and smoothness benefits when compared to baseline values starting at 2 weeks of the preparation usage. In conclusion, this study clearly demonstrates the benefits of a Natural Soy topical formulation in reducing the appearance of unwanted hair as well as providing overall moisturization benefits to the skin. T3 and Hair growth Thyroid hormone is esential in homeostasis of neural crest derived cells. Congenital hypothyroidism leads to severe neurological abnormalities. Thyroid hormone receptor beta-1 is also expressed in the human hair follicle. The C57BL-6 mouse is a particularly useful model for studying the biology of hair growth and the phenomenon of anagen-coupled melanogenesis. Anagen C57BL-6 mice (grey to black skin) can easily be distinguished from telogen mice (pink skin) by observation of their color. The most striking difference between melanocyte population in human skin is that the activity of the hair bulb melanocyte is under cyclical control and that melanogenesis is tightly coupled to the hair growth cycle. Epidermal melanogenesis, by contrast, appears to be continuous. In conclusion, telogen follicles can be induced to enter anagen by topical application of T3. Thyroid hormone can affect hair growth directly, and the follicular melanocyte could be the target cell. Link al commento Condividi su altri siti
