La riduzione dell'incidenza di tumore della prostata con la Finasteride è stata del 24,8% rispetto al placebo in 7 anni ( p< 0.001). Tuttavia i tumori di grado 7, 8, 9 o 10 secondo Gleason sono risultati più comuni nei pazienti trattati con la Finasteride (6,4% ; n=280) rispetto al placebo (5,1%; n=237) ( p=0.005 ). Gli effetti indesiderati a livello sessuale sono stati osservati con maggiore frequenza nel gruppo Finasteride, mentre i sintomi urinari lo sono stati nel gruppo placebo. Il National Cancer Institute , visti i benefici prodotti dalla Finasteride , ha interrotto prima del previsto lo studio. Gli Autori tuttavia esprimono cautela nell'impiego della Finasteride in questa nuova indicazione.
